Who We Are
You've probably heard of a TED talk before. But who are we and what do we do?
What is TED?
TED is a program of conferences organized by Sapling Foundation that stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. The conferences are based on the concept of "Ideas Worth Spreading," with the aim of showcasing important ideas from various disciplines. The format of a TED event allows for attendees and speakers from vastly different fields to connect and draw inspiration from each other, potentially leading to action that can change lives.
What is TEDx?
TEDx is a program created by TED to further share "Ideas Worth Spreading." It grants free licenses to independent, local organizers to host their own TED-like events in their communities. At these independent events, a diverse mixture of people and ideas come together, sparking deep conversations and connections. It's important to remember that while TED provides a general format, the views and ideas expressed at TEDx events belong to the community hosting the event, not necessarily to TED itself.
How do I get involved?
There are many ways to get involved in your local TEDx event. You can attend our event, either as an individual or bring a whole group. You can attend one of our "speaker series" events where you can meet and chat with past speakers. You can watch our past event videos here on our website. You can volunteer to help at a future event, review applications, or support with another talent you may have - like marketing or design. You or your company can provide in-kind donations, giveaways, or sponsor our events or program year round. You can even apply to be a speaker in the future!

McKenzie Templeton
Organizer
McKenzie's background stretches across the region and covers areas like nonprofit programming, workforce attraction and retention, development initiatives, and social media marketing. In May 2024, McKenzie became the Programming and Engagement Director at BRIDGE, a regional non-traditional economic development organization, where she now serves as Development Director. She is also the founding organizer for TEDxJohnsonCity and has led the program for all 3 years. McKenzie is a Twenty Under 20 and Forty Under 40 recipient, a graduate of Leadership Tennessee NEXT, Leadership Johnson City, Leadership Kingsport, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce Executive Institute, and an inductee to the ETSU 1911 Society.
Donna J. Taylor
Speaker Coach
Donna J. Taylor has over twenty years of experience teaching communication and coaching speakers. She is currently employed as a Lecturer for the Department of Communication Studies and Storytelling at East Tennessee State University where she also serves as the Director of the award-winning ETSU Speech & Debate Team. Donna received her Master's in Communication and Storytelling Studies from East Tennessee State University in 2020 and her Bachelor’s in Communication Studies from Cedarville University in 2003. In 2024 Donna became the Speaker Coach for TEDxJohnsonCity and has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with professionals from her community as they develop and rehearse their talks.
